The Munich Oktoberfest is the world’s largest folk festival and actually takes place annually in late September at the Theresienwiese (Therese’s Meadow). The 1st Oktoberfest was actually the wedding celebration of Prince Ludwig I (grandfather of Ludwig II, "the fairytale king" famous for having built the Neuschwanstein castle) and Therese, hence the name of the grounds, the Theresienwiese.
The Oktoberfest always begins on the 2nd to last Saturday in September and ends 16 days later on the first Sunday in October.
In 2009 it is from September 19th through October 4th.
To get there take the U4/U5 to Theresienwiese or U3/U6 to Goetheplatz.
For all sorts of information about and photos of the Oktoberfest definately check out this outstanding page about it all by Roger Keydeck, who also has another great page about going out in Munich at Munich Nights.com
